Guide

Building a course.

A course is put together like a book: parts, chapters, lessons. Each lesson is a video, a text, a PDF, a quiz or a link. This guide goes from the outline to the first enrolment.

1. The outline

Courses › Add a course: a title, a description, a level (beginner, intermediate, advanced) and an estimated duration. Then the outline, on three levels.

Course « Woodworking: joints »
└─ Part 1. The basics
└─ Chapter Choosing your wood
└─ Lesson Video — Reading the grain
└─ Lesson PDF — Wood species sheet
└─ Lesson Quiz — Recognising species

  1. Each level is published separately: one part can be online while the next is being written.
  2. Five lesson types: video, text, PDF, quiz, external link.

2. Videos: where to host them

A video can be uploaded to the site, served by a direct link, or handed to a specialist host — the right choice as soon as videos are many or long. Hosts are declared in Courses › Video hosting.

Custom

  1. Signed, time-limited addresses — one hour by default: a link copied outside the course stops working.
  2. A preview video can be open to everyone, to whet the appetite before buying.
  3. Progress is tracked video by video: the learner picks up where they left off.

3. Quizzes

A quiz checks that a lesson has sunk in before moving on.

  1. Three question types: single choice, multiple choice, true or false.
  2. A pass mark, as a percentage. The learner receives an email depending on whether they passed.
  3. Skipping without passing can be allowed quiz by quiz, for a self-assessment rather than an exam.

4. Access: paid, granted or open

  1. Restricted access (the default): the course is bought in the store — a product whose type opens the course —, or you grant it by hand in Courses › Course access.
  2. Open access: untick the restriction, the course is open to everyone.
  3. Suspending access closes it without erasing progress; the learner is notified by email.

Course emails

  1. Enrolment, access granted, course completed, access suspended, quiz passed or failed: sent on their own.
  2. Reminder to a learner whose progress has stalled for fourteen days.
  3. New content: a button on the lesson notifies enrolled learners. Never automatic, so inboxes aren't flooded while you build.
